Review
"In this book students of Christian spirituality will find a helpful resource jam-packed with scholarly insights and practical help. Diane Chandler introduces students to a wide range of Christian thought and contemporary scholarship. She constructs a holistic approach to Christian spiritual formation on the cornerstones of Christian discipleship, such as the imitation of God and Christ, the love of God, imago Dei and stewardship. Perhaps the book's greatest strength is its stubborn refusal to segregate holiness and spirituality from 'real world' arenas such as finances, food, family and friendship." (Jason B. Hood, author of Imitating God in Christ)
"This well-researched study grounds Christian spiritual formation on a trinitarian and biblical foundation that expands to cover the basic formative dimensions of life. Particularly helpful are the often-neglected areas of vocation and physical health as they relate to Christian spirituality. Chandler is to be commended for this valuable resource that is appropriate for both the classroom and the church." (Tom Schwanda, associate professor of Christian formation and ministry, Wheaton College)
"Using an integrated and multidisciplinary approach, Chandler discusses seven dimensions of personal growth in conformity to the image and likeness of God. She does it with amazing clarity and theological integrity. The result is a book that covers about every conceivable aspect of Christian spiritual formation and could well serve as a handy reference on the subject. A remarkable achievement!" (Simon Chan, Trinity Theological College, Singapore)
"Diane Chandler has provided a much-needed service in the field of Christian formation by integrating the spiritual dimension of formation with the larger elements of human existence. While writings in each of the seven areas of human formation are plentifully available, I know of no resource that attempts the integration Chandler has provided." (M. Robert Mulholland Jr., professor of New Testament, Asbury Theological Seminary)
"The book is effective in presenting Christian spiritual formation as an integrated approach. It is practical and can be a valuable resource in practical theology. The material is understandable and presents meticulous research as evidenced by her use of varied sources." (Kermit C. Moss Sr., Pneuma 37 (2015))
"Although this book is best suited for graduate level, spiritual formation courses, it would be well suited for anyone interested in a multi-disciplinary, holistic approach to Christian formation." (Steve L. Porter, Religious Studies Review, March 2015)
"Diane Chandler . . . has written a comprehensive treatise exploring the process of God's sanctifying work in human persons. The very title of the book―Christian Spiritual Formation―is evidence of the current emphasis on viewing sanctification as an internal process rather than external behaviors, knowledge or skill. Those who are practitioners in Christian formation with emerging adults will connect with the author's holistic approach. The ongoing battle for those working with millennials is finding an objective center for ethical living; Chandler provides that center by connecting all spiritual growth to the Imago Dei." (Jennifer Freeman, CCCU Advance, Spring 2015)

Relational and Intellectual aspects highlighted in Christian Spiritual Formation
By Lynne Kohm
Dr. Diane Chandler discusses an integrated approach to relationships as a natural process in Christian formation. In her book entitled "Christian Spiritual Formation: An Integrated Approach for Personal and Relational Wellness," Dr. Chandler works to bring every aspect of the Christian life together. My favorite chapters were those on emotional, relational, and intellectual formation, probably because I teach family law and see so much relational devastation, but work in that context toward family restoration. Dr. Chandler explains how the priority and foundation of the family are inherent in the original design, and she shows how critical are each of these areas to every Christian. She understands that cultural aspects of relationships have changed significantly over the last generation, but explains how the wisdom of Christ helps one to navigate cultural expectations with wisdom and tact. She also explains the critical nature of having an informed mind as a Christian, and discusses the integration of learning and faith together. These aspects are key elements in spiritual formation, and Chandler shows how a principled Christian can and ought to influence culture relationally and intellectually. This is a book that should be on every serious Christian's shelf.
Lynne Marie Kohm, Professor and John Brown McCarty Professor of Family Law, Regent University School of Law

Beautifully written - perfect textbook
By Renewal theologian
Those who teach spiritual formation in seminaries or other environments will welcome this beautifully written text; Chandler writes lucidly and invites her readers to reimagine what it means to be re-shaped and re-formed and re-newed into the image of God in Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit. I am inspired by her to reconsider how integrated (or not) aspects of my life are and moved toward the potential that could unfold if we lived into the wholeness of God. This is biblical theology at its practical and holistic best!

An Outstanding Literary Achievement ~ Brimming With Rich/Deep/Practical Formation Wisdom & Insight!
By DrDavidCrews
Judging from the rather interesting plethora of spiritual formation books on the market today, some rich in content, others not, Diane Chandler's new book, "Christian Spiritual Formation" is a much-needed, corrective to the popular metanarrative tendency in spiritual formation books to focus either on spiritual disciplines or various traditions of the church, but greatly overlooking the critical interdisciplinary approach that operates in synergistic fashion in Diane's theological, integrative model she proposes.
While there is nothing inherently amiss with either of these two approaches---a well thought out, researched, comprehensive, evangelical, grace-based, Christ-centered, biblically theological work with abundant praxis for daily discipleship---has been sorely needed for some time. It appears that critical need has just been met.
I predict this book holds great promise in setting new standards of scholarship and theology in the growing field of Christian spiritual formation used in the academia dimension (as a textbook) or by Pastors, church leaders, concerned Bible students and informed Christians (as a stimulating primer for discussion and further study).
It is my privilege to heartily recommend this book with great enthusiasm!
