About the Author
Christine Sleeter, Ph.D., Professor Emerita at California State University Monterey Bay, is internationally known for her work in multicultural education. Her nineteen non-fiction books include Power, Teaching and Teacher Education. In 2009, she received the American Educational Research Association Social Justice in Education Award, and in 2011, her co-edited book Teaching with Vision was named Choice Outstanding Academic Title. White Bread is her first work of fiction.�

Engaging, and so "right" ~

"White Bread" engaged my heart and mind. I looked forward to turning each page. As a storyteller, Christine Sleeter made me care about Jessica, her central character. Sleeter delighted me with the insights Jessica acquired as she met challenges. I was struck by the book's authenticity, my ongoing awareness that Sleeter had walked in the moccasins of her central character.
As Jessica overcame emotional and intellectual challenges of researching the lives of her ancestors to find texture, color, and story, I pictured myself on a similar quest. What fun it would be, like Jessica, to undertake a journey of self-discovery. What if I found that I'm not simply "white bread," another undefined dot in the mass culture? Could I, too, then write rich stories about my ancestors?
As a high school English teacher, Jessica's other challenge was to make literature engaging not only for her white students, but also for her Mexican-American students. I marveled that in relating Jessica's struggle, Sleeter was so right on three counts: Jessica had to develop a relationship with her school's only Mexican-American teacher in order to learn how to excel in meeting this challenge. Jessica had to rely on her own strengths of character to find ways to cope with confrontations with other teachers and white parents who saw no reason for her to incorporate another culture into her teaching. Jessica had to find her own ways to build trust with parents of her Mexican-American students.
As we read, many like myself may be motivated to undertake our own journeys of self-discovery, learning more about ourselves by researching and imagining stories of our ancestors and the context of those stories. We will appreciate that Sleeter has provided us with a road map to guide our quest.
As an outgrowth of researching the lives of her ancestors and developing strategies to reach her Mexican-American students, Jessica experiences more connection between herself and others from different backgrounds. In Jessica, Sleeter has provided a realistic model for these changes. As I read I cheered for Jessica and learned from her. I treasure an author whose characters grow and who nourishes my own growth.

I thoroughly enjoyed Christine Sleeter's first novel White Bread

I thoroughly enjoyed Christine Sleeter's first novel White Bread. This book effectively weaves together two parallel stories, one of the main character Jessica's present day experiences as a new teacher in a bicultural school and the other of her German immingrant ancestors life in America in the 1800's.
I was able to get a good sense of Jessical from the beginning. I could feel her desire to be a good teacher, to know and understand her Latino students and their families. As a former teacher in a bilingul/bicultural school, I, too, had the awareness of the students' desire to
know their own history while at the same time learn about about their new home
Because Jessica is dealing with her own identity and feelings of isolation, she begins to research her German ancestory. This part of the book gave the historical experience of German immigrant in our country. I got to know Jessica's ancestors and their struggles in a new country. This opened up new insights on how different immigrants have been treated here. Jessica's letter to the editor really tied togerther the similarity between the German immigrant's struggles and today's Hispanic immigrants and gave a clear and positive ending to the book.
I would highly recommend this book for anyone who wants a better understading of immigratns and their struggles to become Americans., now and in the past.

Cultural Weaving

Dr. Sleeter has written a novel that all teachers should read and take to heart. Even though I teach high school, the journey Jessica takes applies to educators of all levels. Not only do we need to get to know our students, we need to get to know ourselves, so we can appreciate the cultures of everyone and recognize our potential prejudices. This is a very inspiring work, and I am thrilled that Dr. Sleeter took the time to invest her intellect to bring it to us.
