haven't read such a sloppy book for ages...

I'm sorry to say this, but this utterly overpriced book is crap. I haven't read such a sloppy book for ages.
Some severe errors:
p. 343: the author introduces Integer.parseInt(String) and also says the wrapper class Long also has a similar method, that is, parseLong(). After this, he mentions that the other wrapper classes don't have parse() methods...
Of course, much as the book was published in 1998, it doesn't even mention JDK1.2, so the author is alwats referring to either 1.0 or 1.1. The problem with this, of course, that he sometimes mistakes action() for actionPerformed() and doesn't make a clear distinction between the two event model. I wih it was the most severe error in the book, by the way... the truth is that the book is far-far worse.
p. 275: the guy suggests there are static local variables in the language... "However, a local variable is destroyed when its method terminates. Unless you make the array static, it will be destroyed when its method terminates."
p. 253: Vector: the author explains why it is necessary to know the actual type of any object, stored in a Vector - nut doesn't mention that this type can be enquired after a get operation both statically (instanceof) and dynamically, To show you an example of the (several) errors in program code, right the next row in the book has a missing opening parenthesis:
(Float) Sales.elementAt(i)).floatValue()
You can also see from this example that the authoir doesn't even try to make his book adhere to the Java Naming Conventions - and, of course, does not explain them.
p.98: "println cannot accept arithmetic expressions" - it can, if they're enclosed in a pair of parentheses
p. 425: doesn't even mention wait/notify; he says the following about synchronized:
"A synchronized method includes the keyword synchronized in its first line:
public class synchronized returnDT className "
This book is deifinitely NOT worth buying / reading.
