Why I Wrote This Book
I got the idea to write this book after years of answering questions from advisors looking for help with LinkedIn. After explaining the same concepts over and over, one advisor said, "You should write a book on this stuff."

My goal is to inspire you to stop being confused, intimidated, or frustrated by LinkedIn. It's not rocket science and it only takes a small upfront investment of time to master. The lingo and interface can be downright annoying to use and I am the first to admit it isn't always user-friendly. But that's no excuse to give up.

If you are an advisor, I guarantee that you deal with more difficult and technical systems every day to research investments, rebalance accounts, and create financial plans. The difference is that you've given yourself permission to be an expert in those arenas. Trust me when I tell you that you're capable of navigating all of the complexities LinkedIn has to offer if you put forth some determination and a little patience. If you approach the effort with a can-do attitude, it will be a piece of cake.

That said, my own Dad still will not log in to his LinkedIn profile unless I am physically sitting next to him. He forwards me the email notifications from LinkedIn and asks me to come to his office and help him log on. Luckily, my office is less than a mile from his, so I agree to show up if he'll make coffee. It's perfectly fine to ask your kids, spouse, or administrative assistant for help until you feel more confident.

However, if you get one thing from this book, I hope you empower yourself to figure this stuff out on your own. Our world has gotten more techy in the past decade, but it is also easier than ever to find good tutorials online. Every time you get stuck, Google what you're trying to accomplish for instructions or watch a YouTube video on the process. No matter the topic, I promise there's help on the Internet.

As a Millennial, I get pushback from advisors that I don't understand how difficult all this social media stuff is for them, and I understand that. But I am actually in the older wave of the Millennial generation; Facebook didn't come out until I was almost through college.

My younger Millennial siblings think I am older than dirt and I don't "get" their social media practices. They laugh when I use emoticons "wrong" or don't know what their trendy new acronyms mean. My two younger sisters-in-law are not only done using Facebook, they're already "so over" Instagram!

Snapchat is all the rage with that age group, and since I want to be involved in their lives (and let's face it; I want to seem cool) I'm in the process of learning how to be the savviest of all Snapchatters. All it takes is 30 minutes of time, some focus, and a couple YouTube videos. I'll have my finger on the pulse of their lives until they take up some new social network next month.

Great guide for financial advisors and other professionals

The LinkedIn Guide for Financial Advisors is a roadmap of how to utilize the network you already have and how to expand it to a greater reach than you previously believed possible.

Claire breaks the steps down into:
1) Making an Extraordinary Profile
2) How to Reach All Star Profile Status & Sharing Content to Grow Your Network
3) How to Use Linked In to Help People and Generate Referrals
4) What to include in your content marketing

She gives great examples and puts it all into actionable steps. These steps could be used by CPAs, lawyers, or real-estate professionals in addition to financial advisors. I'm looking forward to her upcoming books on e-mail marketing, websites and whatever she has coming next.

The book is an easy read that takes readers through a step by step process to build the best profile, utilize searches, make and get introductions and much more. She offers practical steps to take every day to maximize results. Like any marketing, don't expect overnight results. But if you're looking for a handbook to get started and grow with LinkedIn, this is the right book to read.

Actionable tips to help you rule your LinkedIn experience

I (used to) consider myself a LinkedIn pro. After all, I've used it in some form almost every day for the last seven years. After reading this book, however, I quickly realized I am very much still an amateur. I found myself pausing mid-page to look at my LinkedIn profile and make some much needed updates. After I finished the book, most of my profile (headline, summary, publications, etc.) had been updated using Claire's tips.

Claire gives actionable instructions on how to make your profile and LinkedIn marketing strategy stand out from the hundred of thousands of other financial advisors. At about 100 pages, you can read this book over a couple of lunch breaks.

LinkedIn has become the go-to source for prospects and clients who want to research your credentials and experience. As Claire says in the book, Google your name and you'll see that your LinkedIn profile is probably the first to pop up in the search results.

I've had the pleasure of knowing David Mason, D.O. for many years. I treasure this book because it allows me to have a quick reference to viscero-somatic reflexes. I think the sacral dysfunction chart alone is worth having the book.

Excellent source! This book gives you ICD9 codes, helps you distinguish between 2 minute, 5 minute and extended treatment plans. There are general technique explanations as well as a thorough explanation as to which techniques help with the most common ailments eg asthma, chf, or depression.
Wish I had bought this book earlier in my med school career as it is instrumental for clinical years.

Meet Java itself and learn to Speak Java for Android

I got this book through other site and have couple of things to say about it.
I've been a PHP developer for last 7 years and I wanted to bring something new to my world of programming.
I decided to play around with Java. I did some researches and found that Java has been #1 most popular and requested programing language for years now and looking at forecasts the future is bright for Java and the developers themselves.

There are quite a lot of books, tutorials and tons of articles about Java programming.
I started from “Java: A Beginner's Guide”. But soon I got bored with it. There’s too much theory and knowing the process of learning by yourself (like I had with PHP/HTML/CSS/jQuery) you need to develop some application that you can test, play around, maybe dig a little bit more on the web and add some cool features on your own. And that makes you feel the level of accomplishment.

“Java: A Beginner's Guide” is a great book but it’s more like a dictionary, something that stays on your shelf and you need it when you need to find definitions and explanations of something very “Java” specific. It’s more like official documentation of Java.

After digging though tons of books and their contents I discovered “Learning Java by Building Android Games”. It was a great “Discovery”, yeah I mean it. The title is self-explanatory, clear and very intriguing.

How can you build an application and a game without knowing the programing language itself? The Key is - the book is very well organized.

First it starts with giving and overall look at the Java and Android worlds.
Then you setup the environment where you’ll be working and the author, John Horton uses Android Studio and this is one more plus to this book. Android studio is cross platform, neat design and enhanced with all tools and UI elements that you need for your android application, the way like Xcode is organized for iOS development.

When you are building an application it is crucial to have the visual and design parts to be ready for the use so you can directly start thinking of your project and not – how to make a table view item? How to make a button? In addition Android studio has built in SDK of Android and Android emulator so you don’t have to install in manually as if in case you would work with NetBeans or Eclipse.

Personally I love NetBeans and I use it on daily basis when working with PHP/HTML/CSS/JS, but I wouldn’t use it if I was building Android apps.

Next – you meet Java itself and learn to Speak Java. Everything is very well organized, and when reading more and more you get more involved into this book.
The apps you build will feature sound FX, graphics, and animations. You will learn everything from using the standard Android User Interface (UI) designer.
After each chapter you feel that your knowledge is not just theory but it is a practical stuff that you know about Java language and real programing.
By the end of the book you’ll be able to say that you have finished products/applications/games (call them whatever you want) and you can now build your own apps based on examples for the book, or just go and publish them.
When I finished reading this book I had the feeling of achievement. Now I know a lot about Java programming and can build applications and games for Android with ease.
Learning Java by Building Android Games by John Horton should be a discovery for everyone, novice or experienced developer to dive into the Android world with Java. This book falls into my Top 10 list of books, for sure.

Excellent book! I have this one and John's follow ...

Excellent book! I have this one and John's follow up book, Android Game Programming By Example. This book assumes little, if any, experience in java and android studio. (With that being said, the more you know about programming the better off you will be obviously.) Ultimately, using both books and gamecodeschool.com (which is his website he runs), I was able to create exactly the type of game I wanted. He also provides support and answers questions if you get stuck which is EXTREMELY helpful because honestly there is no way around it: you will get stuck (Not because of the book obviously, but because programming is challenging!). It is definitely an added bonus when you know he is there to help you out. This book fills a special niche in the game programming world and while there are a few other books out there that might be similar, they are either outdated, lack support or has some other problem that make this series the best. You will not be disappointed!

The book itself is easy to follow and informative. However, I ran into so many bugs with Android Studio that I was spending more time trying to fix those than read the book. So that has really turned me off of the book.

Pirsig's newest work continues in the same philosophical vein as his earlier books, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance ( LJ 10/15/74) and Guide book to "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance" ( LJ 10/15/90). Lila is a novel-cum-philosophical tome that wrestles with the issues and problems of life in the Nineties. Phaedrus, the principle character, is a writer grappling with his latest treatise, the "metaphysics of Quality." Lila, his aging and desperate wharf-bar pickup, provides the right amount of antagonism and criticism to hone his ruminations of life and civilization to something understandable and real. Pirsig has some fairly interesting ideas, but his evasiveness in defining his version of "quality" early on may lose some readers. His transition from the novel format to the philosophy lesson is uneven and distracting at times. However, his observations lead to some surprising revelations. Readers familiar with his earlier work will want this. Recommended.

Pirsig's absorbing second novel, appearing nearly two decades after Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, continues where his former work left off--in an exploration of the Metaphysics of Quality set against a journey by sailboat to the Atlantic Ocean. Phaedrus, peripatetic author of a successful book about motorcycles, is once again on the road in this philosophical odyssey--or rather on the Hudson River, as he makes his way toward the Atlantic and, eventually, Florida. His initial goal was to isolate himself sufficiently to complete his second novel, which currently consists of hundreds of notes that he regularly reorganizes and stores in rusty card-catalogue drawers. But isolation is the last thing a sailboat captain experiences on the water, Phaedrus discovers, and it's just as well, because his encounters with Lila (an aging former prostitute), Richard (her childhood friend), and assorted others along his journey inspire even more exciting concepts for his philosophical book. Chief among these is the concept of ``quality'' or value, which Phaedrus posits as the basic organizing principle of the universe. Shifting away from the Western world's reliance on subject-object and cause-and- effect relationships, Phaedrus suggests that everything is instead an expression of more or less quality, and that evolution moves not toward survival of the fittest but toward higher forms of value. While Phaedrus teases a ``scientifically-based'' morality out of this concept (lower forms of quality, such as individual humans, should be sacrificed if necessary in favor of higher forms, including society and, even higher, ideas), Lila begins exhibiting psychotic behavior and Richard becomes increasingly irritated with Phaedrus' abstract, self-absorbed pose. Readers may occasionally feel the same irritation--scenes that advance the plot seem carelessly scribbled in the author's hurry to get back to his theory--but as ever Pirsig's provocative ideas far outweigh such drawbacks. Doesn't get the attention that ZAMM gets, probably because it is significantly less accessible. But the ideas expressed in here are profound, and the effort expended in understanding them is greatly rewarded.

It Takes Time to Appreciate this Book

LIla is the second novel by Robert Pirsig and while not as compelling as his first, Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance, it is in my opinion the more important of the two. In it, Mr. Pirsig lays out his Metaphysics of Quality which is a moral guide to living a good life. While that may seem a bit ostentatious, I assure you it is not. Having spent the last decade and a half studying and discussing this book, I feel I have barely scratched the surface of what it has to offer. A must read!

If you appreciated 'Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance' you're right where you belong. It's broader than that though, and necessarily longer. The philosophical ideas are woven into a novel again. It's 'fiction', but this time the setting is a little easier to imagine apart from autobiography. Really a great book. Can you balance the valuable freedoms accorded to individuals with the values important to society?

Shannon Miller remains the most decorated gymnast in American history. She received her law degree from Boston College. Shannon is the founder and president of Shannon Miller Lifestyle, a company dedicated to empowering women to make their health a priority. Danny Peary is an American film critic and sports writer. He has written and edited twenty-two books. He lives in New York City.

A fierce competitor gives her all

In this memoir, Olympic gymnast Shannon Miller tells her life story from birth through her gymnastics career, to her post-Olympic achievements and into her 30s, when as a young mother she is diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Ms. Miller is a fierce competitor, ready to tackle anything, whether the challenge is gymnastics, injuries, academics, the business world or cancer. "You give it 100 percent or nothing, there is no in between," she writes.

The vast majority of this 286-page book addresses her gymnastics career, including her two Olympic outings. The emotional highlight of the book is her recounting of her gold medal-winning balance beam performance at the 1996 Olympics. It was nice to read of a competitor who actually enjoyed her big moment, the applause of 40,000 people and her first-place perch atop the winners' platform.

Ms. Miller's cancer story comprises just 40 pages at the close of the book, and true to her nature, it is a fierce survivor's story. I had hoped to hear more of her experience of battling cancer, but she doesn't dwell on this time in her life. Perhaps she doesn't want to be viewed as a victim, but rather as the victor she always has been.

Throughout the memoir, in fact, I found it hard to maintain an emotional attachment to Ms. Miller's story. She is so relentlessly upbeat that she allows herself little personal reflection and spends almost no time parsing the troughs of her life. At one point, she declares she wants to quit gymnastics, but she gets over that within a few pages. She marries young and the marriage ends in divorce, but she devotes just two paragraphs to that episode: on one page she's married, on the next she's living alone with two dogs. What happened there?

I would also have liked to hear more about the people in her life. For example, she says she doesn't know what her current husband saw in her when they started dating. Easy enough to ask! Her parents must have made incredible sacrifices for her career, but readers don't hear much about them, except the lessons she says she inherited from them. ("Dream big and go for it!") I also get the idea that she absorbed some sort of faith from her parents, her mother in particular, but although it is mentioned a few times, faith is not a huge factor in the book -- if you aren't a person of faith, in other words, you will not find the book offensive.

All in all, this was a fine read, but not one with much depth. Perhaps this mild account is true to Ms. Miller's experience, but if you want an entirely different view of the competitive gymnastic experience, read Chalked Up: Inside Elite Gymnastics' Merciless Coaching, Overzealous Parents, Eating Disorders, and Elusive Olympic Dreams.

I love Shannon. I don't necessarily love Shannon's book.

I want to start out by saying that I LOVE Shannon Miller. As a child, other kids often resorted to telling me that they liked another gymnast better than Shannon just to get the ultimate rise out of me during a "war of words." :) I dressed up as her for Halloween one year with a flag leotard and scrunchie. I couldn't have been more obsessed! Over the years I've also hung onto every word of both Krista Quiner's and her mother's books with unbridled interest.

Unfortunately, it's because of my devoted fanship that I've decided to be honest with potential readers and give you some forewarning about this book: it is very tedious. If you're a serious fan then you will find the rote regurgitation of fact about her gymnastics career to be boring and monotonous (I was literally able to finish sentences listening to the audiobook, like the Tim Dagget quote she references). On the other hand, if you're not an obsessive fan then I'm not sure you will care about the unbelievable level of mundane detail she provides ("I ate a power bar and half a banana"...).

I'm only halfway done with the book (and have not yet made it to the 96 Olympics) but I have found the first half to be one giant PR spin without much of any emotional insight. Shannon politely acknowledges that her fame might have been hard on her siblings but says they were happy for her and she was unaware of any turmoil. She gives some details: like there was controversy about the '92 Olympics trial winner, but she doesn't explain why: because Kim actually beat her in the Olympics trials portion but her Nationals scored weighed her average down, resulting in Shannon being the winner. I mean, seriously, who cares at this point..?! I find it odd that Shannon wouldn't give more insight and instead report simply that there "was controversy but it didn't bother me." It's not like they'll revoke her title at this point!

On that note, the other "controversy" Shannon alludes to is the one with Kim Kelly who qualified for the Olympics and was then arbitrarily removed from the training squad, in favor of Michelle Campi who was too injured to compete. This is a major mark on USA gymnastics and decades later her coaches (the Parkettes) were shown still shedding tears over it. This incident was basically like the 1980 Olympic trials all over again except the trauma landed on the shoulders of one lone girl who was forced to stay home. Shannon gives absolutely zero indication that she has any sympathy or empathy for Kelly in the wake of this scandal and merely reports that her own position on the team was secure. I found this passage (along with others) to be somewhat cold and severely lacking emotionally. Beyond that, it does nothing to give us insider information about the situation. Like with most portions of the book, I know more on my own about everything Shannon describes about this incident than I've gleaned from reading her account. I would be fascinated to hear more about the Karoyli world back then (which she saw during the Olympics) but her mother's book (and other people's tales) gives FAR more information about any of that than Shannon does. According to Shannon, everything was all dandy all the time!

The other shocking omission from Shannon's story is her Christian Science upbringing. Shannon talks about her family having a Christian faith and says she didn't often go to the doctor as a kid, but she fails to acknowledge the giant elephant in the room which is that she was raised a Christian Scientist. Her mother talks about this dichotomy in her own book and explains the reasons that they ultimately sought medical attention for Shannon's sports ailments. I find it really odd that Shannon wouldn't delve into this.

I think introspection into this religious affiliation (which I'm not at all judging, just remarking on) would be extremely interesting to reflect on as Shannon describes her fight with cancer. Ultimately, I believe that Shannon got robbed of the AA gold in '92; I believe that Shannon is the greatest gymnast America has ever had (Carly Patterson is my runner up); and I have nothing but total respect for her as an athlete, mother, and fellow human. As an author though, this is a very shallow recounting of basic facts that you could read on Wikipedia in a more succinct form. I'm sorry to say this in many ways, but I was really hoping for something more in the way of connection and candor.

That being said, I'd pretty much buy a bridge if Shannon Miller promised to sell me one!

Disturbing

As a gymnastic coach for over 30 years I received this book at a recent competition in which my gymnasts participated. I was excited to get this book and spent the next day reading it. My initial reaction was this is great that she describes the life benefits of gymnastics. With that I agree and am happy she found the inner strength she gained from the sport to help her with other adversities she faced in life. However, I was not able to sleep that night because the book kept running through my head. I realized that I found this book very disturbing. The amount of time spent in the gym, the continued injuries, the isolation, the difficult transition to live life after gymnastics, the financial and emotional sacrifice of her family are all valid arguments against doing the sport at that level. I love the sport of gymnastics and all the life lessons a child can take from the sport. Shannon's story reaffirms my coaching philosophy against children working out so many hours at the gym, pushing through injuries, and sacrificing their childhood for the remote chance they will get to the Olympics. I hope in reading this book parents and coaches who are condoning these types or practices will reevaluate the potential damage this kind of lifestyle could do to a child.

haven't read such a sloppy book for ages...

I'm sorry to say this, but this utterly overpriced book is crap. I haven't read such a sloppy book for ages.
Some severe errors:
p. 343: the author introduces Integer.parseInt(String) and also says the wrapper class Long also has a similar method, that is, parseLong(). After this, he mentions that the other wrapper classes don't have parse() methods...
Of course, much as the book was published in 1998, it doesn't even mention JDK1.2, so the author is alwats referring to either 1.0 or 1.1. The problem with this, of course, that he sometimes mistakes action() for actionPerformed() and doesn't make a clear distinction between the two event model. I wih it was the most severe error in the book, by the way... the truth is that the book is far-far worse.
p. 275: the guy suggests there are static local variables in the language... "However, a local variable is destroyed when its method terminates. Unless you make the array static, it will be destroyed when its method terminates."
p. 253: Vector: the author explains why it is necessary to know the actual type of any object, stored in a Vector - nut doesn't mention that this type can be enquired after a get operation both statically (instanceof) and dynamically, To show you an example of the (several) errors in program code, right the next row in the book has a missing opening parenthesis:
(Float) Sales.elementAt(i)).floatValue()
You can also see from this example that the authoir doesn't even try to make his book adhere to the Java Naming Conventions - and, of course, does not explain them.
p.98: "println cannot accept arithmetic expressions" - it can, if they're enclosed in a pair of parentheses
p. 425: doesn't even mention wait/notify; he says the following about synchronized:
"A synchronized method includes the keyword synchronized in its first line:
public class synchronized returnDT className "
This book is deifinitely NOT worth buying / reading.

Modern guide & refrence to the 8085

Excellent reference & How To guide. I own both the Kindle and the Softcover editions.
Very strong in most categories and no errors that I found.

What's missing;
1) It doesn't have auxiliary circuits for the CPU like reset, POR, Single step hardware, Instruction step, UART clock etc. I.E. If one was to build a a small Computer system with the 8085A.
2) It doesn't have a section on a Software Monitor and/or mini Operating system, this would include software debugging with Instruction Step, Breakpoints Memory/Register Inspect & Change etc.
3) The 8255 section does not have coverage of the popular LCD displays and programming.
