A Time to Live (A Time for Love Book 1), by Kathryn Loch

The chemo didn’t work, neither did the experimental therapy. When Nikki Matthews learns she is dying of lung cancer and has only has six months to live, she abandons Los Angeles and flees to Shadow Mountain, Colorado…a place where she always wanted to live…a place where she can die in peace. Despite her intentions of no friends and no attachments, she meets Michael de Roumare. Half French and half Arapaho, the residents of Shadow Mountain treat Michael with hatred and contempt. Nikki is not sure why and try as she might, she cannot deny her growing attraction to the handsome young man.

Michael has known only hell the past year, falsely accused of rape and disfiguring a young woman, the jury found him not guilty but he was tried and convicted in the press – a vicious, backwater half-breed. Then, to his horror, someone starts killing the women in Michael’s life and framing him for their murders. The residents of Shadow Mountain now fear a serial killer walks among them and they are certain the vicious murderer is Michael.

Nikki came here to die. She never planned on finding a righteous goal, she never planned on fighting for the truth, but she has found that with Michael and perhaps…just perhaps…she might find something more in the short time she has…as long as the killer doesn’t reach her first.

From the Author
I'm very excited to release A Time to Live as an ebook. The contemporary suspense romance has a fantastic cover created by the very talented Erin Dameron Hill. Although only recently released, this book is not one of my most recent writings. I'm still working on getting my back catalog on Amazon and that takes time, especially since I'm also writing new work. A Time to Live is actually the second novel I ever wrote with the intent of publishing and the first in the contemporary romance genre (the very first novel I wrote with the goal of publishing was the historical romance By Any Other Name). So readers of his novel are going to see differences in writing style and story structure. In each of my books, I am now putting a list of the novels I have written. They are in order of writing, not release dates. If you're curious about which came first, the chicken or the egg, check that list.
That being said, I still like this story and enjoy the characters. Michael especially has a very special place in my heart because his skills and talents are unlike any other hero I've ever written. I hope you enjoy reading A Time to Live and I want to thank all of my readers for making my venture into ebooks and Amazon a successful one.
Happy reading!

From the Back Cover
Nikkifrowned in confusion, but allowed him to put the jacket on her. She looked upat the wall of the ravine then abruptly slumped against him, her hand clutchinghis shirt. "Michael," she whispered in a tiny voice. "I was so worried. Ithought they were shooting at you." Her entire body began to quiver.

Heheld her as tightly as he dared, his heart warming with a sensation he did notcare to examine too closely. "It's all right, sweetheart. I'm here and I'mgoing to take you home."

Shenodded. Carefully, he lifted her into his arms.

Nikkibit back a soft cry of pain, then abruptly sagged, unconscious.

Michael'sheart lurched. "Nikki," he called, his voice strained. "Wake up! You've got tostay awake."

She didn't move.

"No,Nikki, don't do this to me." His arms tightened around her.

Michaelheard the sound of another four wheel drive churning along the edge of theravine. His stomach coiled. Were Taylor and his goons returning to finish whatthey started? Two sets of headlights approached and Michael scowled. Usuallythey all piled into Taylor's Jeep.

Thevehicles stopped at the edge of the ravine. People carrying flashlightsemerged. "Miss Matthews?" A voice boomed.

Michael'sscowl deepened, that didn't sound like Taylor.

"Sheriff,"another voice said. "Over here, I found shell casings."

Fearblazed a mindless path through Michael's body and his heart slammed against hisribs. How did the sheriff know to look for Nikki? Michael dismissed the thoughtas he stared down at the unconscious, injured woman in his arms. If they foundhim like this it would start all over again. He would be blamed for somethinghe had not done.

Michaelsearched the dark forest around him. He could leave Nikki here and fade intothe woods. As long as they didn't see him, they couldn't blame him for this. Buthow could he return her to the freezing snow? It was dark and the storm grewworse. What if the sheriff didn't find Nikki in time and she died? Michaelwould never be able to live with himself.

Hisjaw was so tight it ached, but Michael took a deep breath. "Down here, sheriff!"

Flashlightsspun toward him, shining in his face, blinding him.

"Freeze,Roumare! Put Miss Matthews down."

Michaelwinced as the sheriff and his deputies leveled their guns at him. "I can't,sheriff, she's too cold. If I put her back in the snow the hypothermia willkill her."

"Isaid put her down!"

"John,"Doc Blackthorn's voice rang out. "Michael is right."

Michaelbreathed a sigh of relief, he hadn't realized Doc was there. The man was one ofhis few friends on Shadow Mountain.

"Doc,"the sheriff snapped. " I've got to follow procedure here."

"Listen,"Michael barked. "Nikki is injured and far too cold. The longer we stand herethe worse it will get. About one hundred feet to your left the ravine levelsout."

Thesheriff snapped a curse. "Start walking, Roumare, but do anything stupid andyou're a dead man."

Michaelgritted his teeth, but moved toward the opening of the ravine. Two deputiesshadowed him along the edge, while the sheriff, Doc, and the others climbedinto their vehicles and drove to the end. Moments later, Doc threw open theback of his customized Suburban and pulled out a stretcher. He rushed toMichael. "Is anything broken?"

"Notthat I could find," Michael said and quickly related Nikki's injuries. He easedher onto the stretcher. The sheriff and one of his deputies grabbed Michael'sarms and twisted them behind his back. Cold, hard handcuffs clamped around hiswrists.

"Youare under arrest for the attempted murder of Nicole Matthews. You have theright to remain silent...."

Michaelsqueezed his eyes shut as the sheriff's voice droned in his ears. Not again, his thoughts screamed. I didn't do anything. He had counted ona woman telling the truth once before and had known only betrayal. The sheriffand the legal system would push Nikki to the breaking point and she wouldbelieve the lies. The horror would happen all over again.

Slowly,Michael lifted his head and stared at Nikki's blood spattered face. Only onething truly mattered. "Please let her be all right," he whispered.

Brilliant engaging story
By Gii
This was a wonderful story. The cast of characters diverse and interesting. I loved that Nikki was selling up and moving to the mountains to 'die'. Along the way she meets her neighbour Michael. She tries to maintain a distance because she doesn't want to cause any pain for people when she is 'gone'.

She unknowingly stumbles into a town fraught with racism and a serial killer. Is the serial killer her neighbour? Or is it some other yahoos that made a negative impression?

Michael is a half breed Arapaho Indian and French. He is tied to the land and is in tune with nature. He was a gem of a character. This story was believable and had all the elements to make it a great read; romance, suspense, serial killer, stupid ass men that should get the 'Darwin Award' and an extremely biased Sheriff!

I had to Finnish this till the end it was that engaging. I do have to admit that the killer is not too difficult to figure out. The 'whys' were really interesting to read. Nikki doesn't take any crap and can hold her own! Real kick ass girl!

Do yourself a favour and download this immediately, you won't be disappointed!

Brilliant!! Awesome Read!!
By Brenda Romine
I want to give this more than five stars! It was that good!! Totally loved the story line and how well the story flowed. The characters are so lovable and down to earth. You just can't put this down until you are finished.

Nikki takes off to Colorado to die alone. She was given only three to four months left to live. The chemo treatments and all the tests were just to much for her to handle anymore. Not to mention the doctor who was treating her was her her lover.Nikki found out he was sleeping with another woman and she just wanted to get away and die in peace. She figured it was better this way. No one to leave behind grieving for her.No more tests, no more problems. What she didn't expect, was to meet up a with a ruggedly handsome man who could make her weak in the knees and infuriate her at the same time.

Michael,he has fallen for the new girl in town but it seems trouble follows him where ever he goes. The towns people don't like him and try to drive him out of town every time he sets foot in its limits. Michael can't help but try to make friends with Nikki. After all she is his new neighbor now.
There is just something about her he can't put his finger on.It's like she's hiding something and hold back at the same time. But once they both start to fall in love things really start to get crazy. Michael gets charged with another murder that happens in town.It seems like he keeps getting framed for these murders but the charges don't stick. Something strange is going on and it's going to take over his life. Worse of all now Nikki is at risk as the next target.

Like I said, this is an amazing story and you want to put it down!

A very enjoyable read.....good mystery element.....
By CmP
What really stands out for me in this story is the building romance between a man, beaten down by racial intolerance, and a woman who is seeking a peaceful existence in her remaining months of life. I like how quickly Nikki Matthews (main female character) catches onto the racial intolerance shown towards Michael de Roumare (main male character). She reacts quickly and with anger - something to be admired and is telling of her good character. I've gotten so used to all the angsty stories lately and it was refreshing to read a story without all the 'road-blocks' to falling in love. These two simply belong together and they are quick to realize their feelings for one another.

Something is going on in the town, something bad. Women have been murdered and guess who is being blamed for it? I liked this mystery element - kept me wondering who was behind the horrible murders. There are also very bad hunters killing wolves and terrorizing the residents who get in their way. It was like the 'local hunter mafia' had rule of the small town! The local police also seem to be racist.

I admired Nikki's complete belief in Michael and her willingness to put her money into helping him stay free. She didn't hesitate to help him when he needed it and he wasn't too proud to take her help. A strong man - YES. A man who accepts help he knows he needs is a very attractive guy. Michael isn't an ultra-alpha man......refreshingly different and yet, all man.

Overall; I found this story very interesting. I'd read it again. It was a quick read - not real long. For the length the author packs a good amount into the story.
