An ambiguous betrayal
By A Customer
Why did the author write this book? A thin veneer of justification on a predictable 'the public's right to know' basis hardly covers the doubtless financial motivation, added to which is a generous measure of self-promotion, none of which seems to compensate for the clear betrayal of his secrecy oath made when joining the Navy.
I describe this as an ambiguous betrayal because one is left at the end not really knowing exactly what was truth and what was fiction, with the book being split into a schizophrenic mix of the first half alleged fact (although there is a fair amount of dramatic licence taken in that half) and the second half alleged fiction (but written in the first person as if it were fact). At the end of reading it, one feels somehow 'cheated' - is it a work of fact or fiction? Clearly the author is attempting to exploit this ambiguity for maximum benefit, but it leaves the reader unsatisfied.
Probably the only clearly factual (and betrayal) part is an entirely unrelated appendix - there are several of these added for no real reason except perhaps to bulk up the book.
The book is also replete with curious errors. For one that claims such familiarity with the area, it is strange that he can't even spell the word Petropavlovsk correctly in his semi self-published book, and his tale of fun and games with the 'mauries' in New Zealand presumably should refer to the Maoris instead!
Disappointly for a "been there, done that" book of this type, (and particularly in view of the author's claim to have been a keen and expert photographer) there isn't a single photo or illustration.
For those looking for an 'I was there' type book describing life on a submarine, there are plenty of better choices. "Big Red" as a nonfiction account, or any of the works of, eg, Patrick Robinson or Michael DiMercurio for fact based dramatic fiction.

Good reading
By J. Phippen
I just finished reading Crazy Ivan and found I couldn't put it down. Having put the USS Greenling in commission and being around during some of the earlier submarine 'adventures' I found very little that I could fault in your writing. Some of the nuke technical facts weren't quit right, but coming from a 'forward puck' it was close enough. I enjoyed your style and the stories more than I could ever say. Thanks for taking me back aboard.
