The book I love most.

Of all the books that I have read (some 80,000 titles), Touch of Wonder is the one that I love most (besides the Bible, of course). It inspires me, encourages me, affirms me, and carries me through difficulties in life. I have given many copies to friends and associates. This one will bring personal joy and amazement to friends as a gift item. I particularly like the chapter on the spiral ladder in Santa Fe and the midnight sky full of comets. Put it next to your pillow as a close friend.

Powerful!

"Speak through me, Lord, if it be Your will," is a line from the opening prayer and I believe God answered it affirmatively.
Arthur Gordon's book is awesome!
Consider what he says about receiving from giving. He writes, "...people who give admiration and affection get them back--if what they give is spontaneous and sincere. People are irresistibly drawn to 'warm' people."
He describes an interview he had with Rudyard Kipling. The famous author told Gordon, "Do the things you really want to do if you possibly can. Don't wait for circumstances to be exactly right. You'll find they never are."
Mysteries are explored in this reflective collection. Intuition, the unsolved, and similar musings. Life is celebrated! We're told "there are two types of human beings: those who think of life as a privilege and those who think of it as a problem."
Consider this poignant observation he makes on purpose, "The worst that can happen to any creature is to be made incapable of doing the thing it was created to do."
Perhaps the most famous Arthur Gordon quote is included in this book. It's one I've heard Guidepost writer and editor Fred Bauer use: "Be bold--and mighty forces will come to your aid."
This is an awesome book. Its contents are powerful. I highly recommend it. The quality of your life will be enhanced as you become aware of the positive perceptions that exist beyond the sometimes cloudy temporal state of affairs.

What a voice!

Greg Brownderville is articulate and heartfelt, and Gust has more good poems than in any ten other recent collections I've read. He has a mind for metaphor, the really cool ones that linger in your brain long after you've finished the poem. Whether he's talking about fishing or religion or sex or some combination thereof, he knows his stuff. For fans of narrative verse, or just those who like colorful characters, this is a rare treat.

Beautiful beautiful beautiful. If you're a poet, definitely should read. If not a poet, also should read.

This is some of the best poetry i have read in a while, as good as the top writers in America today and those in the past as well. You'll find a lot in contemporary poetry anthologies that aren't as good as some of these.

I think writing like this is vital so that more people can enjoy the art of poetry. i think writers often make their poems far too abstruse and difficult to read and relate to, but Mr. Brownderville proves you can have "professional" poems that are still visceral, relevant and accessible.

The long poem "Holy Ghost Man" is an impressive achievement, an incredibly moving narrative about religion, sex and finding ones moral compass.

Mr. Brownderville is a huge talent, an important American Poet. This book should have 20 reviews by now in my opinion.

My Favorite Book of Poetry

Since hearing Brownderville read from Gust and buying the book, I've pressed copies into the hands of several friends. Only some of them are poetry buffs, but every one has loved his work. His poems are both smart and accessible, a combination too rare in poetry. They're musical, and they stick in your memory. They're rich in the details of his native Arkansas, but they have much to say about the larger world. This book is more than worth the money. It's exciting to discover a writer on the way up, as Brownderville is, but already producing at the highest level.

This is not one of my favorite textbook. When using this book as a resource

This is not one of my favorite textbook. It is not as user friendly as other textbooks I have used. For example when you are looking for specific information to answer questions from the book, even after reading the chapters, its not easy to find. Sometimes the answers are in different chapter. A couple times I found answers for a chapter review 100 pages further along in the book. I had better luck finding answers in textbooks I have used for other classes. Sometimes I just went straight to google.

They can fix any shortcomings on the spot, rather than waiting days or weeks for 3rd-party testing results.

About the Author
Rick Chitwood
Richard (Rick) Chitwood, BSME, is the founder of Chitwood Energy Management in Mount Shasta, California. As a design-build contractor for over 25 years, Rick is an expert in energy-efficient residential building construction, diagnostic testing, and performance evaluation.

Rick has extensive hands-on experience working with builders to improve the energy efficiency of new homes and with homeowners and remodelers to improve the thermal comfort and energy performance of existing homes. For example, he personally performance tested over 3,000 homes in Northern California though Pacific Power’s Home Comfort Program. Rick holds California contractor’s licenses A (General Engineering), C-2 (Insulation) and C-4 (Boiler), and has also been a certified as heat pump installation technician by the Refrigeration Service Engineers’ Society.

Rick is a leader in the building science-based house-as-a-system approach to green home energy design and retrofits. As the lead diagnosis and remediation trainer for the California Building Performance Contractors Association (CBPCA) Rick is one of the principal designers of the CBPCA’s training curriculum. He conducts over 80 days of training every year for Architects, Energy Consultants, HERS Raters, HVAC and insulation contractors.

Lew Harriman
Lewis G. Harriman III is the Director of Research & Consulting for Mason-Grant in Portsmouth, NH. He has 35 years of experience with HVAC, building energy reduction, humidity control and investigation and remediation of indoor moisture problems.

Lew has served as the lead author of several chapters in the ASHRAE Handbook (American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air Conditioning Engineers). He was also the Project Manager, lead author and illustrator of ASHRAE’s Design Guide for Humidity Control, ASHRAE’s Guide for Buildings in Hot & Humid Climates and the report to the California Energy Commission titled “A Builder’s Guide to Mold Risk Reduction.”

Lew has lectured extensively throughout North America, the Carribbean, Asia and Europe on the subjects of building energy reduction, infrared thermal analysis of building enclosures and humidity & moisture control.

In recognition of his consulting and teaching excellence, in 2009 Lew was elected a Fellow of ASHRAE.

A "must read" for anyone getting started in Home Performance Contracting

As a Home Performance Contractor and teacher who desires to do really good work, I have found this book to be full of excellent topics, practices, check numbers, and advice. In short order, it has become my handy reference and concise source of exactly those things that took many classes, emails, endless searching, and learning "the hard way" to discover and convey to students of Home Performance and building science.

Taking the reader through the full sales and proposal process, in a comprehensive and methodical way, is an invaluable gift of the authors' wisdom- something worth far more than the cost of this book. The chapters on HVAC design include dry climate check numbers to compare and verify that your high performance design is measuring up. And with multiple industry experts contributing their expertise to compile this comprehensive reference source, you'll find yourself reading this book more than once from cover to cover, and dog-earing many pages for future review.

My company has designed, overseen, and performed well over thirty deep energy retrofit projects in Northern California, a place where the winters get down into the teens and the summers up into the 110's. The practices which the authors teach are exactly the same as the foundation of all of our projects- practices that have saved between 40 and 60 percent of total annual energy usage for our clients- and at the same time created huge increases of indoor comfort, air quality, building durability and much safer homes. But this isn't a "pick and choose" type of book- you'll need to embrace the "house as a system" concepts which the book explains in simple, everyday terminology- and adopt all of these practices in installing and detailing all of the energy features which work together in symbiosis. And speaking of everyday terminology- I found especially entertaining the chapter on the importance of avoiding "technospeak" in your customer meetings (you know, the ones where their eyes glaze over and you know you've lost them with your technical jargon?)

This book is really for anyone who either wants to understand or perform energy efficient residential retrofitting- be it consumers, homeowners, contractors, utilities, or suppliers. And those entering the energy efficiency field would benefit greatly from wholly adopting the practices and standards outlined in this resource. From valuable advice to amusing illustrations, you'll enjoy this easy to read book written by very intelligent authors.

The Home Performance book you've been looking for.

I am a trainer in California, and bought this to help develop a curriculum for HVAC and remodeling contractors transitioning to home performance. All the goods are there, in a very information-rich but to-the-point and accessible guide. It gets four stars because it really needs professional editing, and the print-on-demand service resulted in some funky page formatting, but that aside, you're not going to find a more helpful technical reference for practical residential energy upgrades out there today.

Internationally Dr. McDowell is well known having made 271 different country visits since 1971. He has given over 500 major talks in 42 different countries. The information in the book came from a class that is taught in college. I enjoyed the historical background regarding the path the various vitamins have taken from their first discovery to when they were actually synthesized for general use. I think we often take for granted what we grow up with as a normal part of our lives and I remember hearing about taking vitamins my whole life. It's truly fascinating to learn about the many people it took to bring all this knowledge together. I'm grateful they persisted. This is a solid history with many illustrations from the various nutritional deficiencies that were causing all kinds of diseases throughout man's history.

The MUST have Workbook / Studyguide for Destinos!

I use the Workbook / Study Guide Volume I (covers episodes 1-26) with the "Second Edition of the Alternate Edition" textbook (ISBN 0-07-252536-3) and the Destinos video series . It supplements and expands the exercises in the textbook . The additional exercises are helpful in the learning process. For me, it is a MUST to have this Workbook / Study Guide. That being said, this Workbook / Study Guide is difficult because it requires more time, more work, more discipline, more focus, more thinking, more everything. If you don't have that extra "more," I strongly suggest that you NOT buy this Workbook / Study Guide.
If you buy the Workbook / Study Guide, you will need to separately buy a set of audio CDs or audiocassettes. You can't do the exercises in the Workbook / Study Guide without the audio CDs or audiocassettes. The additional audio CDs and audio cassettes are:

Workbook/Studyguide Vol. 1 for Destinos

This workbook is an excellent expansion of what is learned in the Destinos Student Edition text. At the time I ordered the workbook and text, I thought I would be receiving the CDs that are referred to in the workbook. These were not included. It should be made clearly that CDs for the text are different from the workbook. It should also be made clear that the CDs for the workbook have to be purchased separately.
