While the State of Israel is successful in many ways, including scientific discoveries that it shares with the world to improve life, living in Israel is in some ways different than in the US, and people planning to make aliyah, to settle there, need advice how to prepare for settlement, what to expect, and how to handle even somewhat simple matters. This comprehensive book by an MBA, TEP, Licensed Portfolio Manager, who made aliyah himself, who lectures for Nefesh B'Nefesh, the very successful organization that helps aliyah, gives advice on a dozen categories, each containing two to eleven chapters. Labinsky explains the Israeli system and how to navigate it for subjects such as developing a personal financial plan, selling one's American home, updating insurance policies, the Israeli employment market, asset management in Israel, retirement and estate planning, the Israeli banking system, taxes, buying or renting an Israeli home, and how to live on an Israeli salary. One of the sections also discusses close to a dozen frequently asked questions such as where do I go when I get off the plane, what benefits does the Israeli government give to new settlers, and what should I bring to Israel.

The book contains some eye catching and enlightening poignant cartoons, charts, and to-the-point summary endings for every chapter. The is a cogent step-by-step guide to making the financial transition to living in Israel. Facts on the ground are married with good humor and encouragement. You don't have to be a financial expert to understand what to do to prepare for a new life in Israel. The book offers sample budgets and scenarios that make clear how to plan your financial affairs. You can assess how much money you will need, what you have, and where you can expect to fit in. The guide frankly states what pitfalls to watch for and how to avoid them. We expect our copy to be well-thumbed and even coffee-stained before we land on Aliyah.

Useful ... but only BEFORE you make aliyah!

When I decided to make aliyah (move to Israel) mid-summer 2012, I was happily, dually employed, able to pay my bills and put a bit away at the same time. Life was good. Financially I wasn't perfect, but I was getting there. When the aliyah approval came through, I didn't think I needed to sit down and figure out how much I needed monthly to survive in Israel. If I was getting by in Denver, I could get by in Jerusalem, right?

I tend to read books in moments of "hindsight is 20/20," and that's how things feel after reading Baruch Labinsky's A Financial Guide to Aliyah and Life in Israel. Oh where was this book before I made aliyah? Although, the truth is, you can take a horse to water, but you can't really teach him to drink. Without the motivation to really think about the financial reality of living in Israel, this book will never grace your coffee table, let alone help guide you.

With cheesy comics that aren't really funny, Labinsky walks the reader through how to use the book (it isn't one of those cover-to-cover reads, unless that's your style), how to understand taxes (which, let's be honest change constantly in Israel, so it's a moving target), how to plan for retirement, how to look at your assets, whether your savings will last, and so on. It's got all of the basics, complete with charts about just how expensive the basics in Israel can be.

Yes, dairy products in this country cost 44 percent more than other OECD countries. On the other hand, veggies here are happily inexpensive.

Although the book would have been a lot more helpful before I came on aliyah and lost both of my cushy jobs (oh why didn't I plan financially?), there are plenty of helpful anecdotes, like how negotiating at the bank is incredibly important. Find an advocate, Labinsky says, which is key to protekzia, or the ability to protect oneself by utilizing contacts and connections! Also, the bits on working for U.S.-based companies while living in Israel and the potential tax concerns is in my wheelhouse these days.

There's a lot of really powerful, conversational advice in the book that I know will guide plenty of potential olim on their financial journey into Israel. When you've got kids and a family or are a retiree, there's a lot to consider when making the big leap across the pond.

Also? The cover on this book is a huge win!

If you know someone considering aliyah, I highly recommend sending them this book. There are a lot more considerations when it comes to picking up and moving to Israel, even if you're willing to give up certain aspects of "comfortable" living for the fulfillment of a religious or personal ideal. If you're not a planner, take a chance with this book anyway. Believe me, you're going to need it!

Full of breathtaking adventure onstrange, fully realized worlds, it also completely satisfies on an emotionallevel. Characters are unique and well-rounded, and even the nonhumans havedistinct and intriguing personalities.

About the Author
Aurora Springer is a scientist morphing into a novelist. She has a PhD in molecular biophysics and discovers science facts in her day job. She has invented adventures in weird worlds for as long as she can remember. In 2014, Aurora achieved her life-long ambition to publish her stories. Her works are character-driven romances set in weird worlds described with a sprinkle of humor. Some of the stories were composed thirty years ago. She was born in the UK and lives in Atlanta with her husband, a dog and two cats to sit on the keyboard. Her hobbies, besides reading and writing, include outdoor activities like gardening, watching wildlife, hiking and canoeing.

Exactly the series ender I wanted and needed

I've really had a ball reading the prior books in this series, thee prequel Grand Master's Cat and the trilogy's book 1, Grand Master's Pawn, and book 2, Grand Master's Game. All were excellent and highly recommended. I gave them each four stars which is typically as high as I will go. Well not now. Grand Master's Mate gets that fifth star from me. It's exactly the series ender I wanted and needed.

To me the sign of a great series is the yin and yang of both strongly wanting the final HEA and dreading it as the ride will have ended. That's certainly how I felt about this series. If it had to end, at least it's gone out with a bang (and l, really, hint hint Aurora Springer, there's always room for a postscript book or two ...).

It's a gas series how the series lead characters, Violet and Athanor, have grown over the course of books. The author has great talent in making her characters grow and interact with others. Those other secondary characters, be they human, intelligent plant, or everything in between, have been wonderful characters as well - strong enough (hint, Madame Springer) that they could be leads in their own side stories, the mark of great secondaries.

I'm not going to spoil things by actually giving you any details of the wonderful plot in this book. If you've been reading the prior books in the series and are wondering if this one meets the high bar of quality set before, I think my rare 5 star rank answers that question. If you're new to the series please don't let those five stars push you to start here. You really need to start with at least book 1, or ideally the prequel, all excellent as previously noted, in order to get the full impact of this book. Bottom line: 5 stars on this one if you've read the prior books, 4 stars as a stand-alone. Highly recommended (and that's an understatement).

[Review Addendum: in the time since I wrote the above, Aurora Springer has answered my reading prayers and done precisely the postscript book I wanted so much. The new Grand Master's Galaxy book is called Cosmic Rift. Amazon says that it will be released in June 2017. You just know I will be waiting delightedly to get it.]

Flashy! Of course that's how it works. Just visualize where you want to be, touch the implant behind your ear, and "step into it." Quantum mechanical entanglement with an inhospitable adjacent universe takes you right there. Why fuss around with wormholes or warp drives, which we know to be silly nonsense?

I was so bored with reality after reading this astonishing series, not only with having to actually get in my car and endure urban traffic down the same roads for the ten thousandth time, but also with real people who take weeks or months to decide if they will do something (Violet's friends are in or out in 5 minutes, even if the proposal is to travel to the other end of the galaxy and endure great danger).

I am not being as sarcastic as you might think. If we are going to postulate laws of physics favorable to magic, why make them difficult? Teleportation worked on Star Trek, and the great civilizations they encountered could do it across the galaxy. Come read this novel about a future human civilization in which 12 grand masters can do just that. And try catching one of them when they can just teleport out of trouble. There are many great puzzles to solve and trials which only character and not techno-magic can solve.

If you are reading this review, chances are you have already read the first two novels in the series and are only wondering if this is up to snuff. Yes, that and beyond. In fact it is definitely better than the 2nd and possibly the best of all three, with the most character development, great and hard-won explanations for some of the mysteries, and a resounding and spectacular and also hard-won conclusion.

Perhaps Springer is the only modern author as inventive as Burroughs or Klein. There is something new and amazing on every page. And dialog to go with it.

Exciting sci fi romantic adventure delights

GRAND MASTER'S MATE, the third and final book in Aurora Springer's GRAND MASTER'S trilogy, is exciting and original. Full of breathtaking adventure on strange, fully realized worlds, it also completely satisfies on an emotional level. Characters are unique and well-rounded, and even the nonhumans have distinct and intriguing personalities. My favorite alien character is the enchanting and loyal, sentient plant Brightness Amarylla Threeleaf. Amarylla, who always refers to herself as Brightness, speaks in an alien voice that is charming and idiosyncratic without sounding Yoda-like. I was very glad that she figured so often in the story, as she was always a delight.

The main characters, Violet and Athanor Griffin, have grown greatly throughout the saga: Athanor in humanity, compassion, and sociability, Violet in maturity, experience, and self-confidence. I loved the way author Springer portrayed both characters, especially their growing love, respect, and intimacy (discretely handled). Athanor, despite his initial arrogance, actually comes to accept Violet as his partner and equal long before Violet is able to see herself that way. That she can finally do so is, I think, a great step in her deepening maturity.

I've enjoyed every book in the trilogy, but GRAND MASTER'S MATE is a particularly strong conclusion to the saga. I'm sorry to come to the end of the story, but it's a wonderfully satisfying read in every way! Definitely recommended!

This book is single highhandedly the best introductory resource to Korean that I've seen so far... and I have tons of books. This book has explanations that took me ages to search for on the web. This is something that I wish I had when I first started learning Korean. It is really well laid out and keeps me motivated because there is a structure to everything. If you don't have Korean classes in your area this is a really great alternative. I've heard great things about Japanese From Zero and was so excited when George announced he was working on Korean from Zero. There are plenty of places to practice your handwriting in the Hangul section as well as the rest of the book. One problem with most of the books that I own is that it is laid out just like a novel with no opportunity to practice. This book allows me to constantly feel engaged. The best part is that after the Hangul section, romanization is completely absent! Including romanization in a language learning book is the absolute WORST thing authors can do. Stop it! If you seriously want to learn a language then you need to learn the alphabet. Romanization is used as a crutch and will ultimately slow you down. If you're serious about learning Korean this is definitely the book for you - for that reason alone.

GET THIS BOOK!

So, you've decided to learn Korean. Congratulations! That's great! I did too. And when I did, I saw a TON of material out there, but most of it was disorganized and confusing. All the "serious" language books were a little daunting as well because of all the technical linguistic jargon used. Seriously, none of us really use words like dipthongs and gerrunds. (Well, at least not the low-brow people I interact with on a daily basis.) So if you are unclear what a present perfect participle is...this is the book for you!

It combines the "serious" concepts like verb conjugation (yeah, some of the jargon is unavoidable) with a no-nonsense approach to teaching you usage. It's meaningless to memorize a bunch of words. With this book, you begin to understand and recognize patterns in speech. Then, the authors skillfully teach you to exploit these patterns to expand your knowledge and your "speaking sense" by merely adding vocabulary since you already know and understand the underlying patterns!

What I also found helpful are all the little tips and tricks that are tucked throughout the book. Little things like why you might hear a "ch" sound in a sentence when there is no "ㅊ" character in the sentence. I also liked the interactive nature of this book. It is meant to be written in! It is like a combination textbook and workbook. (I do recommend that you use pencil in case you screw something up. That way, you can correct it, and when you review it later, you can review the correct examples.) You can also download the audio files from their website. This greatly expands your retention of the material since you are engaged in three different ways. (Seeing, hearing, writing.)

Perhaps it's not the be-all-end-all of Korean language books, but what it offers is a good solid foundation for your future studies. Even intermediate learners will pick up some useful tips, tricks, and explanations from this book. In short, it's brilliant and I highly recommend this book!

Concise, Readable, yet Advanced

Although concise, this so-called "baby DeMay" is far from incomplete or immature, and can serve as an excellent cytopathology resource for a pathology resident. (A staff pathologist with occasional responsibilities in signing out cytologic specimens may also find it useful.) But for the cytopathology component of general pathology boards, this book is arguably the only resource one requires, and is certainly a valuable component of a residency library.

A concise but comprehensive book with great images

This book, like its big brother (The Art and Science of Cytopathology, by the same author), is well written, even fun to read. It includes virtually the entire realm of morphologic cytopathology in a concise, portable format. It is well organized with separate chapters for the Pap smear, fluids and organ systems in some cases and individual organs in others. It even includes a chapter on gonads and a microbiology chapter covering many "bugs" that can be seen in cytologic specimens. The images are of excellent quality (as we have come to expect from Dr. DeMay) and include appropriate examples of specimens stained with Papanicolaou and Diff-Quick methods, in addition to some illustrative H&E histology. This book is an excellent addition to the library of the pathology resident, cytotechnologist and even practicing pathologist for a quick consultation, and I enthusiastically recommend it.

The iformative at a glance Cytology book

It was my dream when I read about this book, having an idea about the major Cytopathology book 'The Art & Science of Cytopathology' I thought that the book is informative but I can't imagine whether all Cytology information could be included in such mini text. It was difficult to me to buy this book because it is not available at home country book stores at the same time no master card facilities. I made a request to my colleague in America and I received the book after three days mail. When I went throuh the pages I found information enough and I used it as an excellent review for the paper I introduced in Uk at the IBMS congress on 'Giant Cell Carcinoma of the Lung. It is my pleasure to comment on a book written by an expert scientist Richard DeMay a pioneer of Cytopathology and really it is a great honor for me to tell this story from Sudan, and it is a real baby for the baby 'DeMay R.M of the Father of Cytopathology George Nicolas Papanicolaou.

About the Author
Nicknamed "Slim Darley", the late H.C.H. Darley was formerly a member of the Institute of Petroleum in London, an active member within SPE, and a Researcher for Shell for almost 25 years as well as a Consultant. Darley earned a BS degree in Petroleum Engineering from Birmingham University in the UK, and Mr. Darley passed away in 1996.

The late George Gray, or "Doc Gray", as he was known in the industry, was a drilling fluids technologist for NL Baroid for over 30 years and a pioneer in the development of drilling fluids technology. He willingly served on innumerable committees and held various offices in technical societies, including Director and Vice President of SPE and various poistions within the American Chemical Society and American Petroleum Institute. George earned a BS degree from Texas Christian University and a MS and PHD degree from Rice University and was a registered professional engineer in the state of Texas. George passed away in 1983.

Though this book is little dated, the theory and principles are still applicable to today. Some of the techniques and practices have been updated to meet today's enviromental standards. This book is the "bible" for mud engineer's and chemist designing drilling fluids for the oil industry.

A sci-fi film that can be enjoyed by non-sci-fi viewers

This sci-fi thriller can be enjoyed even by people who dislike sci-fi films and books. The sci-fi element, which has no relationship to reality other than as a parable, is essential to the plot but it is not overly complicated or too bizarre. In fact, the message of the film is thought-provoking and relevant. And the story is well-acted and entertaining.

Without revealing too much, Matt Damon's character meets and is attracted to the character played by Emily Blunt, who is also attracted to him. But there are forces, ruled by the "chairman," who does not want, for reasons that become clear in the film, the couple to form a relationship and marry. This "adjustment bureau" has the ability to manipulate circumstances to make sure that events happen as they want; in this case, to keep the couple apart.

Viewers can think of the "chairman" as God, and the "adjustment bureau" as divine angels who carry out the divine wishes. They can also see the film as addressing whether humans have free will and, if not, can they have at least some control over their lives; in this case, can Damon and Blunt defy the "chairman" and the "adjustment bureau" somehow and, if so, how and when?

Viewers can also ask themselves, should God control the world, especially when it is clear that the world is filled with evil people doing so much wrong?

About the Author
Marianne M. Jennings, Emeritus Professor of Legal and Ethical Studies, has taught at the WP Carey School of Business, Arizona State University from 1977 through the present. She has six textbooks and four monographs in circulation in the areas of business ethics, ethical culture, and legal environment. She was director of the Lincoln Center for Applied Ethics from 1995 to 1999. Professor Jennings has worked with government agencies, professional organizations, colleges and universities, and Fortune 100 companies on ethics training and culture. She is a contributing editor of Corporate Finance Review and Real Estate Law Journal. Two of her books have been named Library Journal's book of the year. Her books have been translated into three languages. Her book, The Seven Signs of Ethical Collapse, was published by St Martin's Press and has been used as both an audit tool and a primer by numerous organizations for creating and sustaining an ethical culture. In 2011, Professor Jennings was named one of the Top 100 Thought Leaders by Trust Across America and in 2012 she was named one of the 100 most influential people in business ethics by Ethisphere magazine. Professor Jennings served on the board of directors for Arizona Public Service (now Pinnacle West), the owner of the Palo Verde Nuclear Station, from 1987 through 2000. She has also served on INPO's advisory council since 2005. She conducts ethics training and ethical culture assessments for businesses, including Fortune 100 companies, government agencies, professional associations, and nonprofit organizations.

Not exactly 'like new'
By On the way to MBA
Having purchased only new books previously, I was hesitant to purchase a 'used' book, but had reviewed many positive comments relative to the quality of the used books received. Knowing that my used texts from college are in practically new condition, I went for the 50% savings over the cost of a new text with a used book described as 'like new'.

The book arrived within the allotted timeframe, but appeared to have a pot of coffee spilled on it. The entire bottom corner of the book (about 1 to 2 inches in) is discolored and in some cases, pages are sticking together. Although I'm over halfway through the text, only two notes have been identified so far, so the inside of the book was essentially untouched other than the staining.

It still reads, so is serving its purpose. I was a little disappointed to have a stained book, but it was nothing that required returning or hasn't fulfilled the requirement. I was hoping for a used book with good notes from the last user, but apparently received a spilled coffee over some late night cramming? I'll probably go back to new for future classes.

So interesting, I wrote the author

Now, really. Just look at that title. Could a book be more b-o-r-i-n-g?? Boy! was I wrong. You will be amazed at all the cases Jennings packs in this book right along with newbie instruction. And you will find yourself reading WAY past what you looked up in the index. It's that interesting.

I'm keeping this one in my professional library (and my husband has even used it as reference in his degree program) and even wrote to the author telling her so. I definitely wasn't expecting humor in a "law book," but that's what I found. If this is a textbook for a class (as it was for me), you're in for an interesting few weeks of reading.

Outstanding Business Resource

This book was used in my MBA Business Law course and was so well designed I purchased this text as my business law reference book. The book itself is an excellent resource not only for my business law class but have used in other MBA courses I have taken. The text is written in a simple and easy to understand format. The 8th edition is the most current edition and covers all business legal matters. A must have reference resource! Overall, I recommend this book.

Wonder for any piano music lover

There are several reasons I love this book. For one, the songs are very familiar and are pleasing to play. These are instumental works so you get to play it the way it is performed, instead or incorporating the melody into the right-hand piano parts. The chord progressions are very interesting (flat 9th chords, flat 5th, etc.) especially the way they are voiced. You can see an example at the sheet music plus web site. There is another version of this book with parts that are easier to play. I have only seen one sample page from that book (Linus and Lucy) and in the other book it is played in C major and doesn't have the left-hand rhythmic anticipations (first note begins an eight note early) while this book has the song in E-flat, which is a little harder to play but sounds richer. I have a QRS player piano roll of Linus and Lucy and I noticed that it matches the Christas CD better. The song on the CD goes through the main part of the song three times with two swinging (hard to play) refrains. The two refrains are a little different, with the second one being more dissonant than the first. The book documents only the second. The bass line for the refrains are simple walking quarter notes while the piano roll has a rag-time style alternating eight note bass notes and chords. This is fine by me because this is plenty hard to play as it is (triplets over quarter notes, etc.).

At any rate, check out the sample at Sheet Music Plus to see if the difficulty matches you ability. If so, this is a great purchase.

A faithful transcription

I got this book as a present one year and was absolutely amazed. I've always loved the Charlie Brown Christmas Special and came to appreciate the music more and more as I grew up. Reading through the book, I discovered that the authors had done a painstaking job of transcribing Vince Garauldi's performance nearly note-for-note. When you first start playing "The Christmas Song" for example, you hear those flat-9 chords Vince loved to play and think to yourself, "Yeah, that's the real deal." Even the improvised solos are transcribed wonderfully.

This is NOT a book for the faint of heart. If you are unfamiliar with playing jazz piano, you may quickly get overwhelmed. However, what better way to learn some advanced chord voicings than to play it exactly the way the arranger did? The songs are beautiful and incredibly fun to play, but without at least an intermediate piano skill level, you may get frustrated.

If you are looking for a Piano Solo book with arrangments by Vince Guaraldi for Charlie Brown Christmas music, This Is It! All of the songs from the CD "A Charlie Brown Christmas" appear in this book. Do Not be fooled by the word "arrangment", if you happen to be looking for the original music. All of this music sounds almost exactly like the CD (and movie for that matter) even to the point of being written in the same key (F Major, G Major, Ab Major sometimes). Excellent Buy!
