Very thorough

This book describes step-by-step how to cut men's hair. This book was written by a barber and he does a great job explaining the haircutting process. I would not buy this book if you want to cut women's hair. I cut my husband's hair now and he is forever grateful! The print is in black and white and the pictures of the models are outdated. Otherwise, an excellent how-to book. Note to publisher/auther: Update this book, please!

I used another popular book and made a mess out of my kids hair. I was too embarrassed to even take him in and have it fixed. I found this one and I finally understood what I was suppose to be doing! This is the one you want. This is the one you NEED.

Fun and helpful book but...

This book has a great do-it-yourself spirit. I enjoyed reading it, however, the information is most relavent if you are going to cut men's and children's hair. The book was written in the mid-80's and the women's styles are out-dated (men's styles are about the same) and the amount of material devoted to them is less than for men. Also, for some reason, the author chose female models who had very curly hair so the directions were difficult to see on them. As I bought the book to learn to cut hair on women, the book didn't meet my needs and so I rated it a 3.
The author is very passionate about his subject and I appreciate his spirit. I wish in his next revision he would add more information about cutting women's hair and improve the pictures.

Chapter One -- The Dating Masquerade

Imagine sneaking into a glitzy costume ball where single men and women primp and prance in the hopes of finding Mr. or Ms. Right. Concealing their real personalities behind psychological "masks," the partygoers position themselves to make the best impression possible. Who knows? The next person they meet could be their long-awaited soul mate, their future husband or wife.

As the band heats up, so do the masqueraders. Ricocheting off each other like billiard balls, they jump from one masked stranger to another in search of true romance. Finally it happens: love at first disguise. A masked man and a masked woman fall in love with the image each is presenting. Perfection, bliss, happiness.

But then the inevitable happens: The ball ends, the masks come off. Now the masqueraders discover what their mate's personality is really like and their hearts harden: "How could I have been so blind? We have nothing in common!" they wail as they find themselves trapped again, miserable victims of the Dating Masquerade.

Located somewhere between never-married-land and divorcehood, the Dating Masquerade is not so much a place as a state of mind. What a find!!! By reading this book and finding out who you really are and then
applying the doctors knowledge on your best match, well that is one thousand times
better than joining any dating program!!

This book falls flat

Dr. Avila proposes a theory for how people will be romantically compatible based on their Myers-Briggs type indicator. He has done a nice job describing the behavioral characteristics of each type. However, I disagree with his hypothesis on appropriate matches. I was surprised that Dr. Avila did not incorporate other research into his book.
For each type, he believes that the exact same type would be appropriate - or the exact opposite type. Other research suggests that people need to share at least 2 preferences to be compatible. Moreover, that the one dichotomy that people often match up on is the S and N. His theories are also in direct contradiction to Kiersey's Temperament - which states that Idealists and Artisans are fundamentally at odds, as are Rationals and Guardians. Avila recommends these matches.
I also found his recommendations for venues to meet partners to be weak. Unless one is in their mid-20s, I can't imagine going to a law library to meet an INTJ.
I don't think that this book was worth the money.

Best Investment I Ever Made!

Alexander Avila's LoveTypes is the single best book I've EVER read in my quests for self-understanding and for meeting the right mate. Charmingly written and drop-dead accurate, it's an immensely practical, easy-to-use system that saved me from marrying the wrong man. What a revelation! Suddently I see where I went wrong, over & over, in my 50 years. Using the myriad insights gleaned from LoveTypes, I can now accurately identify my "best bets" for both friends and romantic partners--in advance--instead of getting carried away by wishful-thinking or trying to fit round pegs into square holes. Dr. Avila's compassionate attitudes also reassured me that as a relatively rare personality [Idealistic Philosopher--INFP], it's NOT my imagination: there aren't alot of us out there! I also read Just Your Type, also excellent, but find that LoveTypes is more condensed, with a terrific format. Instead of using the rather confusing Myers-Briggs 4-letters (ESTJ, ISFP, etc,), Avila identifies the 16 personality types with delightful, easier to use descriptions, such as "The General" [ENTJ]. I used some invaluable practical tips on locating compatible people, with amazing results. As a bonus, reading LoveTypes feels like a big hug!

Good adjunct material

This is a good adjunct book to go along with your study guide. this book seems to cover the basics that you'll find not only in the ACE study guide but also the info found in ACSM and NSCA. Not recommended as a replacement for your normal study guides but works as a good assistance book.

The Chicago Defender began as a weekly newspaper and led an entire race to leave the oppressive South for a better life in the North. The Defender boasted a circulation of more than 230,000 nationally as the newspaper was secretly delivered by Pullman porters to cities everywhere. Almost overnight, Abbott became one of the few black millionaires of his time. By 1920, the Defender tagline was the Worlds Greatest Weekly. The story of the Defender is one of inspiration, struggles, and triumphs and of dreams coming true. It became a beacon and voice for those who for years had no voice. The Defender produced talents such as Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, and W. E. B. DuBois. In 1940, Abbotts nephew John H. H. Sengstacke took over as publisher, and by 1956, the Defender was a daily newspaper.

Myiti Sengstacke Rice, granddaughter of John H.H. Sengstacke and great-grandniece of Robert Sengstacke Abbott, is a professor of African American studies with a Masters from Northeastern Illinois University. Myiti is also a founder and former editor in chief of Uptown magazine.

The Chicago Defender in Images of America

Isabel Wilkerson's 2011 book, "The Warmth of Other Suns" By Wilkerson, Isabel The Warmth of Other Suns: The Epic Story of America's Great Migration Reprint Edition Paperback brought to life for many readers the epic migration of African Americans from the South to other regions of the United States beginning during WW I. One of the most influential voices in encouraging the Migration was an African American Newspaper, the Chicago Defender. A new photographic history, "Chicago Defender" (2012) by Myiti Stengstake Rice offers an overview of the paper and its influence. Rice, a descendant of the family which owned the paper for most of its life, is a professor of African American Studies at Northeastern Illinois University. The book is part of the Images of America Series of Arcadia Press, which specializes in photographic histories of local American life.

In her Introduction, Rice emphasizes the role of the Chicago Defender in the Great Migration with its emphasis on the poverty, lynchings, and discrimination in the region and the possibility of a better life elsewhere. The paper declared May 15, 1917, as the date of the "Great Northern Drive" with a call for African Americans to head north. The paper described the South as "the land where every foot of land marks a tragedy. Every black man for the sake of his wife and daughter should leave, even at a financial sacrifice, every spot in the South where his worth is not appreciated enough to give him the standing of a man."

The history of the book focuses largely on the early years of the Chicago Defender from 1905 -- 1940 under the leadership of Robert Sengstake Abbott (1868 -- 1940).Educated as a lawyer, Abbott founded the paper in 1905 and ran it himself for five years. The paper struggled as a handbill and could not find distributors. When Abbott began his crusade for migration, many Southern States attempted to suppress the paper and it was carried to local communities by railroad porters and by entertainers. By 1915, the paper had a staff and a growing readership. Abbott soon became one of two early Twentieth Century African American millionaires, (together with Madam C.J. Walker). The first half of the book includes many photographs of Abbott's early years in the South and of the paper and its growing influence.

With Abbott's death in 1940, his nephew and hand-picked successor, John Stengstake, took over the paper. The book shows how The Defender's influence continued to grow under Stengtstake's leadership. For example, the paper's columnists in the 1940's included, W.E.B. DuBois, Langston Hughes, Gwendolyn Brooks, and Mary MacLeod Bethune, one of the most formidable groups of writers that could be assembled for any paper. Stengstake and the Defender were driving forces in securing two Executive Orders from President Truman in 1948. The first Order provided for the desegregation of the military while the second created the Fair Employment Practices Commission, the predecessor of the modern-day EEOC. Stengstake expanded the scope and circulation of the paper dramatically and created a powerful umbrella organization for the African American press.

A short chapter of the book documents the role of Stengstake's wife Myrtle in the Chicago Defender and in Chicago's Civic life. A chapter focuses on the Bud Billiken (a fictitious cartoon character) Parade which the Defender began in August, 1929, and which has become a fixture of Chicago's African American life. A final chapter of the book offers examples of the extensive documentary photography of the African American community by Stegstake's son Bobby overa period of 50 years. The book closes with the paper's headlines when Barack Obama received his party's nomination for president. Obama had been a columnist for the Chicago Defender for several years.

The book offers a good overview through its photographs and text of the Chicago Defender and of African American communities in Chicago and in the South. The focus was somewhat topheavy on the Abbott and Stengstake families and on their personal lives. The pages of the Chicago Defender constitute a priceless resource for readers wishing to understand the African American experience. The book could have used more of an emphasis on the paper and its contents.

This Images of America book meets the mission of the series in covering local American places and institutions. It shows how an initially small local newspaper came to assume a historically important role in American life.

About the Author

Alfred Kadushin was the Julia C. Lathrop Distinguished Professor of Social Work Emeritus at the School of Social Work at the University of Wisconsin, Madison. He was the author of Consultation in Social Work, The Social Work Interview, Adopting Older Children, and, with Judith A. Martin, Child Abuse: An Interactional Event, all published by Columbia University Press. Dr. Kadushin passed away in February of 2014. Goldie Kadushin is a professor of social work in the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare. Her most recent book is, with Marcia Egan, Social Work Practice in Community-Based Health Care. She is also the author, with Alfred Kadushin, of The Social Work Interview: A Guide for Human Services Professionals, fourth edition, published by Columbia University Press.

Goldie Kadushin, PhD, is an Associate Professor in the Department of Social Work at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee. Dr. Kadushin is the Coordinator of the University Certificate in Applied Gerontology and the Coordinator of Adjunct Faculty for the Helen Bader School of Social Welfare. Dr. Kadushin's current research interests are in the area of community-based social work practice with the elderly. She is the co-author with Alfred Kadushin of the Social Work Interview, 4th edition (Columbia, 1997). She is the Associate Editor of the journal, Social Work in Health Care.Marcia Egan, PhD, is an Associate Professor at the School of Social Work at the University of Tennessee. Dr. Egan's research areas include social work in health care settings, particularly in community-based settings serving under-served populations, such as the uninsured, marginalized women and their children, and older adults, and the influence of managed care on health care social workers, clients, and practice.

Excellent for students!

I found this book to be a very valuable tool. The authors do an excellent job of describing different techniques and considerations when interviewing. The information is presented in an easy to understand format, and I think this book is a must have for graduates and veterans of the Social Work profession.

very good introduction book

The first 4 chapters or so are VERY boring and dry but the rest of the book is very good at introducing the basics of a social work interview. This book has no pictures, diagrams, or charts and is purely in text format but there are a lot of useful examples and guidelines to follow. I haven't looked at any other interview textbooks and so can't say this is the best, but I know that I have gained a lot from reading this book.

Great Book!

I used this book during my MSW program. My daughter is now in college and she was looking for a resource to help "communicate" and better understand others. This is a great tool with excellent examples. It is not a sit back in the swing and read it casually book. It is a read it, practice it, learn it and do it book! I enjoyed it.

About the Author
Elsie Spittle has been an internationally recognized trainer and consultant for almost four decades. She is one of the few people who knew Sydney Banks, the originator of the Three Principles, before he had his profound insight, and who steadfastly supported him, despite her early strong resistance to his message. Elsie had the privilege of receiving "on the job" training directly from Mr. Banks, and was the first teacher, other than Syd, to share the Principles with mental health practitioners, educators, and others seeking a deeper understanding of life.

For those of us who spent time on Salt Spring, Elsie's stories remind us of a magical and deeply enriching time. Elsie Spittle has helped us see the man Sydney Banks as a human being like ourselves, who sought to have a gentler life with a wife he loved dearly . She shares how in looking for the answer to this very human question, Mr Banks experienced profound spiritual insights that uncovered Three Universal Principles that literally explain everything.

She shares her own journey that eventually led her to an appreciation of the profundity of the nature of The Principles, she and her husband's friend, Syd had discovered. She writes with clarity and a beautiful feeling , powerful stories of change, first her own then others as she became known as a gifted teacher of these Principles in places and business situations "beyond imagination"

A personal memoir and teaching tales from one of the pioneers in the Three Principles

Anyone who is familiar with the Three Principles will probably know about Elsie Spittle since she knew Sydney Banks before he had his epiphany. This book is perhaps her most personal yet as she shares stories about her life from the time when she first learned about the Three Principles through to the present. The book, however, is much more than a memoir since the stories she tells are illustrations of the impact of the Three Principles on her life and the lives of others.

If you already know about the Principles then you'll enjoy hearing about the early days when Syd Banks shared his understanding with others. If you don't know about the Three Principles this book does introduce them and may awaken you to a new reality.
