Finding Hiden Treasures

Danni Ackerman and Kat Simpson expanded my mind while shopping for product to resell. In the Ultimate Guide to Savings by Store, the authors tell about some places to shop for products I never considered. They share where to shop, but more than that, how to shop within a store. They discuss the type of merchandise typically supplied at the stores and where the "goodies" are that can add profit to a reseller.

One thing I love about the book is learning of all the possible discounts that can be had at various stores. The book goes in to detail on how to save money at each store it reviews. Some discounted options may be obvious, but some are ones I would never have learned about without this book. For example, spending $1,000 a year at one retail store, I can qualify for "elite status" which allows me to use all possible coupons without having to "coupon clip" ahead of time if I even would know a coupon existed. Without this book, I would never know that kind of option existed.

Danni and Kat help you identify the type of products to look for at various stores. They have helped me to start expanding my product line for more interesting and fun "treasures". I'll take this book with me when I travel as I may run across one of the stores they mention that I do not have in my area. With the book in my bag, I'm ready to stock my ebay store (FoundTreasureChest, FoundTreasureChest.com) with all kinds of treasures!

It's obvious that Kat and Danni are experienced shoppers and I am not. I have learned a lot from their experience and I know that I'll be able to make much more intelligent decisions in the future. Having a peek behind the curtain of these retail stores puts me in a more powerful position, whether it be allocating my TIME in choosing which store to source from, or allocating my MONEY and making sure I get the best deals possible.

Good Introductory Toxicology Textbook

I bought this book for an upper level college-level toxicology course that I took. It's a pretty small book compared to the other science books that I have purchased, however, it has a good amount of material in it and it's a pretty easy textbook to read and follow/study from — the contents are organized extremely well. I didn't have much of a problem with this textbook, but that could be due to the subject not being AS difficult in comparison to some of the other sciences classes I took in chemistry. Overall, it's a good introductory textbook to the field of toxicology/pharmacology.

Not a 5 star rating because even though there is a lot of material, I felt that some areas could have more detail…

Purchased for a basic toxicology class in which the professor explained little. I turned to the textbook the first week and found that it uses many terms that I was not familiar with... not what I expected for a "essentials book". Not recommended for a non-tox major.

The Encyclopedia of Modern Bodybuilding is the largest tome of bodybuilding information found in any publication, finishing up at around 800 pages with approximately 1000 pictures and weighing in at a whopping 5.8lbs, making it the only book that gives you a workout while reading it. Arnold divides his massive manuscript into a number of sections, starting with the history of bodybuilding, competitions, the gym experience and training techniques (the core exercises) before rounding up with various poses and additional information on bodybuilding supplements and diets. Arnold advocates trying to find pictures of a bodybuilder who fits your size and figure and then aiming to replicate their results. Arnold himself used Reg Park as a model for his first teenage foray in the gym while in subsequent years built each body part up using different bodybuilding models to achieve his own unique juggernaut definition. This is but a tiny fraction of the kind of good quality recommendations that the Encyclopedia comes up with. Bodybuilders (bbs) everywhere refer to the `encyclopedia' for its awesome display of photographs of superhuman bbs throughout the ages. There is no lack of snaps that detail the human anatomy. You will likely run through the book many times to find that muscle group or separation that you missed the first time. It is startling how much anatomy you need to get around before you can understand what impact each exercise has on the developing muscle. This is a fully fledged subject that will have your attention for years to come and there is no better place than to start here. Combining this book with the movie "Pumping Iron" on DVD will give you a much better idea of where the information is coming from and you will see most of the faces in this book actually exercising and involved in many of the competition photographs that are on display here. Arnold's description of the muscle groups and how to work them is coupled with illustrations and photographs to show the kind of development you should be aiming to achieve. Creating striations on muscle groups like deltoids and pectorals are topics that will cause you to go back to page one to re-examine everything you have read and seen. Anatomical research coupled with exercising methodology and application with dieting will transform your physique over the course of even a few months. As a lifelong hobby you will be bulking up before your first year is out. A few years will have you at competition level. The whole point is get into the gym to work off that fat to reveal your true shape, a shape that can be defined and built upon with muscle. Arnold Schwarzenegger, and other world-class bodybuilders, advocate more than one set per exercise called High-Volume Training, HVT, the traditional method of using multiple sets to train to failure by training each set to failure, resting, and then repeating the set to failure, as many times as it takes before you just can not do anymore sets for that body part. You will build muscle no matter what kind of genetics you have if you stick with HVT. Hypertrophy is the scientific term for the enlargement of muscle tissue caused by a specific amount of intensity needed for the hypertrophy to occur. No intensity, no hypertrophy, no gain. HVT achieves hypertrophy every time because each muscle group is trained to failure. This is the key to building muscle. You must get that straining feeling where you just can't do another repetition. If you find yourself doing lots of repetitions (more than 10) then you need to add more weight. Arnold includes various Power-Training techniques to help shock the body into being able to lift heavier weights. They work. He also includes increasing intensity techniques by utilizing `forced reps', `negative reps', `isolation training', `supersets' and `stripping methods' among a host of others to learn about. There is much more here then any review can hope to explain (and look at the length of mine!). That is why it is 800 pages or so. Apart from the five stars which it deserves the book does have some major drawbacks. The first big drawback is that all the photographs involve drug use. There are only a few photographs of bodybuilders who have not used steroids and the reason is obvious. It is the little dirty secret that hides behind all the bigger muscle on display. You simply will not get as big as these legends without doing drugs. However you will certainly be able to achieve the same definition and still have very big muscles without drugs. The bodybuilders who did not do drugs are at the start of the book in the history of bodybuilding. Look at the photographs of everybody until you reach Reg Park. After that it is all drug users. Achieving the same sizes without drugs is near impossible apart from the exceptionally genetically gifted person. There is also a lesson to learn from this drug experimentation. Don't do it if you put any value on the most important muscle of all... your heart. All of the guys in this book are much older now and you can see them in the bonus material of the "Pumping Iron" DVD. Sadly they don't look good (sadly some are in wheelchairs) and even Arnold has had a bypass. Just go with food type supplements like 100% Whey Protein and Creatine and stay away from all forms of steroids. The other major drawback is that the 70s bodybuilding era did not give much regard to what is called perfect form. Perfect form is all about doing the exercises the right way to avoid injury. A lot... and I mean a lot... of the exercises in the Encyclopedia are considered very dangerous, mainly because of back arching. These include nearly all of the `Rows'-type exercises (Bent-Over Barbell Rows, Bent-Over Dumbbell Rows, T-bar Rows and the One-Arm Dumbbell Row) which are abandoned today. A `Straight-Leg Deadlift' is something you must do right or you can injure yourself. The `Goodmorning' is considered iffy. Using a Smith-machine for the `Vertical Machine Press' is bad because it has a set path. Triceps `Extensions' are a problem. Take care with `Dipping' and avoid `Sissy Squats'. Arnold's book does not do perfect form so well and in most cases just comes up with plainly dangerous material. This is not to say that you can not do the exercises now and again. Most you can, but in the long term you will only get an injury. Avoiding injury = gain. It is as simple as that. So learn perfect form. How to do this? If you want to learn perfecting form then read "The Insider's Tell-All Handbook on Weight-Training Technique" by Stuart McRobert. This book clearly explains how to perform Back Extension, Cable Row, Calf Raise, Close-Grip Bench Press, Crunch Abdominal Work, Curl, Decline Bench Press, Dumbbell Row, Finger Extension, Grip Machine Training, Incline Bench Press, Leg Press, Lever Bar Work, L-fly, Neck Work, Overhead Lockout, Overhead Press, Parallel Bar Dip, Partial Deadlift, Pinch-grip Lifting, Prone Row, Pulldown, Pullover, Pullup/Chin, Pushdown, Rader Chest Pull, Shrug, Side Bend, Squat, Stiff-legged Deadlift, Thick-bar Hold and the Wrist Roller Training. Get it along with this book and you will not be disappointed with what you can learn between the two. Getting that perfect form right is something that you can learn from the latter book and start doing better in a year than the bb who has been in the gym for ten years. It is that important. Slow and controlled exercising does not avoid injury. Injury has nothing to do with the speed or control of the exercise. Injury occurs because of bad form. So get the form right, learn what Arnold teaches you about developing muscle groups and stay away from drugs to live until you are 90 with a darn near perfect body. It can be done!

Good book but beginner beware!

I like the section on the history of bodybuilding. It shows how people went from being fat powerlifters to creating a cut physique. Most of these guys are big but don't have veins all over them, which is better than some of today's "champs." I have to commend Arnold for building a big but still proportionate body. Arnold's "beginner" programs will kill a beginner and may even stress an experienced bodybuilder into overtraining. Good book, lots of different exercises, good photos, interesting history.

What I find most valuable about this book is that it provides you with almost every movement done in body building. This is especially helpful in learning how to do a particular movement correctly and without hurting yourself. Everything is explained and illustrated very well. True the nutrition side is lacking but as mentioned in other reviews but that is not the focus of the book.

From my point of view the financial knowlagde this book transfer is very well organised. The grafics and figures help a lot. The secuence of chapters has been articstically estructured.

An indispensable guide

This book is one of my best investments I have ever made. It is perfectly suited for 1st year MBA students with no prior exposure to finance. The first principles chart appearing at the beginning of each chapter always drags the students to the basics of why we are doing things. Prof Damodaran seems to be an excellent teacher and makes corporate finance a fun subject. The support web site has wealth of information and most importantly solutions to problems(I have never understood why many books hardly bother to give answers to problems)are given. Don't do a corporate finance course without this book.

Surprisingly good reference

I was pleasantly surprised by this book. It's an old book printed in 1966. I got it used thinking it would only be okay, but it turns out its a pretty good figure reference book. Lot's of good usable poses both dynamic and casual that most artist would find useful. A lot of them large full-page or half-page size photos. Plenty of standing, sitting, lifting, jumping poses and more that you could find common use for. The pictures are all in black and white, and this was not a problem for me. With low quality of colored pics back in the 60's black and white only was probably a better decision. Overall really good book, however there was only one problem, which is why I deducted a star and I'll get to that later.

Now there are only 2 models in this book, but they are excellent choices as far as models go. They both pose well and have good classical male and female physique types. And I just want to point out the female model is strikingly beautiful, with a classic waistline, with just the right amount of curves that's wonderful to draw. With stand-alone figure reference products like these I have to honestly say that the models make or break it, specially if you only have two. There are some that don't care which models are used, but most artist whether they admit it or not, do care. --This after all is where the very idea of the muse comes from, which I believe all great artist innately understands. The right models can both pose and have the ability to inspire.

As for one real negative in this book which is why I only gave it 4 stars, being that this was made in the 60's they covered up the models 'private' areas. The male model was wearing a g-string, I've heard of artist always saying that they hated g-strings on models, ...now I know why. There are this annoying unnatural lines made by the strings on the male figure. It really throws off the natural flow of the form. Sometimes you can't tell what if it's a real part of the body or if it's the string. I never thought g-strings where big deal in messing with how you view the figure, ---they are! And the female model's genital area is blurred out and they did a really bad job of it in some pictures (60's technology I guess). It was very annoying how bad a job they did in some cases, she looked more like a toy doll in a few pictures than a real human, very weird to look at. Most discriminating artist do prefer entirely nude figures without any type of covering or editing, and I can see why. Both figures are still capable of being drawn even with these cover-ups, they get in the way but not overly so, although in some pictures its very annoying and unnatural to see. I really believe this one decision by the publishers to cover-up the genital areas was what kept this book from becoming a true classic that would have been reprinted over and over again to this day.

-lot's of large photographs
-great choice of models (even if there is only 2 models)
-good quality black and white photos
-good value for the money

CONS
-no color photos
-confusing artificial line on the body caused by male wearing g-string
-female's privates are blurred making some of the pictures look weird
-could have been a classic book for artist

Another great story!

This is very much a continuation of the series and it just sort of carries you along with all the usual verve and interesting plots until you are done and just sad it ended. I will admit that I struggled with all the detail in this book but it was great to read something different and not the normal run of the mill. Try the whole series if you need a book with something not ordinary.

An excellent continuation of the adventures of Michi Tenno

An excellent continuation in the adventures of Michiko Tenno. Our heroine, having graduated from Annapolis and take a commission as 2nd Lieutenant of Marines is on her first deployment in the Far East. Plots swirl around her and she in her inimitable fashion copes right back.
Antoine's writing has improved a lot and _Girl Rides the Wind_ reflects deeper characterization and a complex plot executed well.

The weakest book in a superb series

I've read the whole set now (6 books, well 5 and a short). I wondered if Antoine could keep up the excitement and the answer is "no". This last book is slow (for about 70%) and very very confusing. Finally, at the end, there is some excitement. But I don't see how he can keep Emily's story going without her getting into greater & greater perils each time. The narration switches between characters but often without any idea of who is talking with whom. By the end all becomes clear, but it takes some effort to get there.
There are also more typos than previous books: "intell" should have one 'l'; all instances are incorrect. 'You're' is used for 'your', 'new' for 'knew' and 'one's' for 'ones'. I still rated the book '4' though if I'd read it by itself, I might have given it a lower score. All the other books in the series I rated 5+.
